this is a website
This site is my home on the internet, a naturally raised, home grown website. For the past 7 years, I've been writing, adding, and putting up everything that I've wanted to share with the internet spread across the 300+ hand written pages across my site.
well who are you?
I'm dvd3000. I'm really just another guy tinkering around with whatever hardware and software I can get my hands on, even though I don't play a lot of games. I can thank my grandma's old computer junk for my interest in this...
|
I highly believe in archival and perservation.. since 2018 I've been digitizing my VHS tapes and uploading some cool stuff and writing about television. My ever growing data archive is on my personal 8tb server and I've put up some archives online like the Windows Wallpaper Collection and the Adobe Flash Player Archive
Other stuff I do on the side, I have some photos to share and talk about, I have a blog if you care enough, and more writings and textfiles, and I draw stuff but it's not that good.
Yes, I have friends, and we made some stuff and talk a lot. Some of my friends are from school, most are online here. Some of them are on the forum. The forum is pretty quiet right now, but our chatbox is still pretty active.
why are you here?
This is the real internet. On your own site, you aren't going to be tracked, you won't be censored, and your data won't be collected and sold. You are truly free out here. Forget about unhealthy social media habits, escape the noise, learn HTML and create your own, unique personal home on the net, where you can express yourself and your creativity to the fullest potential with html and css, tweak each page exactly to your liking of how you want to represent yourself. I started my site on free hosting 8 years ago and never looked back. This is where I am on the internet.
I look at the state of the internet today and know we can do better.

Due to the size of my site, and the way I use it, I am on paid hosting now from canspace, a very reasonably priced domain registrar and web host! (not sponsored, I just like them)
"you should win an award for least consistent site design"
i should and id be proud of it
I started this whole thing back in 2014 kicking around on the computer when I noticed you could save a Word Document as HTML. I used MS Word as a(n awful) WYSIWYG editor until 2017. After that, I started writing my own HTML.
When I started the site I just write and write, anything I found interesting I put out there. Eventually I start to get links here, like minded people come around, I get emails, we link to each other. I say the links keep the internet together.. Eventually I get around, people ask me other things, people ask for face reveal, other stuff like that- in my view, it's not about me, it's about what I put out there.
Why don't you get out there and create your own site?
If you wanna place to chat and host ur site, in 2022 I set up an online phpbb commmunity at www.aftersleep.org (SSL required). Just make an account and come chat! aftersleep home (non-SSL)
how might I find my way around?
I've tried to organize this site to the best of my ability, but with the size that this ol' site has grown to, it might be hard to find what you're looking for, or to find something that you might find interesting.
I've implemented new navigation features. As you can see, content on the site is bordered by bars on all sides.
The top bar left side has your current path, similar to the URL in the address bar. The top right has the oldschool dvd3k main linkbar links (may replace eventually).
The left bar contains the main site links, search and webrings (and whatever else). The right bar shows new content, featured posts, and whatever else.
The bottom bar is the main navigation bar. The "rev" link goes to the previous site level. The "top" link goes to the top of your current site level. The icons represent website sections. Hover your mouse over them to see titles.
If you're looking for something, try the navigation index, or just try looking through the sections on the main page!
You can also try searching the web from the search engines on the links page, and you can also find plenty of other cool websites from there.
If you wanna try to stumble across a page that interests you, almost every page on the site has a "random pages" section at the bottom for things that might sound interesting to you. If you wanna try, on the main page, scroll to the bottom and see "Random Pages" and see what stands out to you! Instead of wasting my bandwidth by refreshing hundreds of times, just click the "anything else?" button to see some more!
Also, I highly reccomend that you browse this site on a computer. Many of my pages are small enough to fit in a phone screen, but most items will be WAY too small to click on or read, most UI elements will be broken or out of place, you'll be missing out on many hoverable and clickable things, and it's just overall an unpleasant experience.
"Just add mobile support, then!"
I believe that browsing on a cellphone should be a last resort, when you need to look something up at a gas station. If you're surfing the web, you should do it on a computer. By adding mobile support, I would just be supporting the death of real desktop PCs in favor of "mobile devices".
I don't believe in advertising, and I still don't have ads on my website, but if you're not already, I highly suggest installing an ad-blocker, such as uBlock Origin, on your browser, to keep your browser clutter-free, secure your privacy, keep your computer safe, and keep advertising out of your dreams.
Oh, and also, don't view the site with a stupid plugin that attempts to make everything dark mode for your weak little eyes. Just don't. Shit looks like it's been sitting in milk for 3 days.
Why don't you use CMS like Wordpress?
In my opinion it is far easier to work on my site when I can be close to the raw html and customize as much as I want. Many of the pages on here would not even be possible to create on Wordpress, or would be much more difficult. Many useful features like navigation bars have already been implemented with PHP, and not much more is needed.
join the real internet, and stick around
Something that a lot of Neocities users fail to understand, is that having a website is more than just a "haha lol neocity", no, it's making a home for yourself on the internet.
As soon as you get into making your own website, you realise how pointless social media really is. I created this site in 2014, and I ditched social media and never looked back. Now, this site has really become a home for my entire internet prescene.
So break free from the noise of social media, unleash your creative freedom, and make your own website.
If you want people to come to your site, just put work into it. put work in, link around and the likeminded will come around
I see so many cool sites on Neocities come and go so fast..
I just wanna say, don't give up. Harness the power of the true internet and make your own website. Put work into it, put your soul into your site... everything you want to share with the internet, even if you don't want to because you think nobody cares or nobody will see it..
Put it out there anyways...
Just put it out there, link around, and you'll find your people.
So please, make your own website. The modern web can be better than this.

related stuff
Over time, this site has grown further than I ever expected it to. You can find almost anything on this site by going through one of the links on my navigation page or the sitemap. (around 2020 I broke the link mess into sections so you can hopefully find anything)
In 2022 I fixed the site structure and added better navigation bars to all pages.
Wanna talk to me? You can always send me an email! Or you can talk about it on the forum! The forum has a relativley active chatroom
